…from your Director
You all made our
2008 Annual Forum a success, in spite of my “jitters”, so a big THANK YOU,
REGION 7. It was an honor for us to
share in the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Austin, San
Antonio, and Waco chapters. The Forum Committee worked very hard to put this
event together and they did an outstanding job!
Martha Simpson raised a total of $1,428.0o for NEF through raffle ticket
sales and Ladder Club donations. We were
fortunate to have Christie Wigginton, NAWIC Immediate Past President, serve as
our national representative and participate in our Forum; her enthusiasm and
professionalism are an inspiration to us all.
As of April 1,
Region 7 has recruited 82 new members this year, bringing our total membership
to 308 talented women! These are
exciting times in NAWIC. Thanks to the
efforts of Kathy Sterling, De’Ann Gill, and the Houston chapter, we will soon
be chartering a new chapter in the Beaumont/Port Arthur area, adding at least
30 members to our region. I will get to meet these dynamic women later this
month – how exciting is that! This
process has been a great experience for me and I am looking forward to seeing
the results of everyone’s efforts. There is more to come and I will certainly
keep you informed of progress.
The Region 7
Website is under construction. Now, I
need some help from one of you talented women to volunteer to administer our
website. My knowledge of such things is
limited, at best, and there simply are not enough hours in the day for me to
learn this process. So, please contact
me if you have an interest in taking on this task.
Chapter Officer
and Director elections are coming up in June and the Nominating Committees are
looking for candidates. Serving on your
chapter’s Board of Directors is a wonderful opportunity for personal and
professional growth as well as utilizing your unique talents for the benefit of
all. I urge you to consider serving in
some capacity – it just might be the best thing you have ever done for yourself
and others.
Plans are under
way for a Region 7 Leadership Training workshop on August 18 in Austin. This workshop is for the benefit of incoming
Officers, Directors, and Committee Chairs to learn more about the opportunities
and responsibilities available to them.
Of course, any member is welcome to attend. I would like to extend a special thank you to
Laura Culin for volunteering to coordinate this event for us.
NAWIC Officer
voting ballots will be mailed by May 31.
Remember to cast your vote and return your ballot promptly.
Thank you,
Julia Campbell

NEF NEWS:
The NAWIC
Education Foundation is seeking nominees for the 2008 Carol Kueker Construction
Education Visionary Award. Established
to honor Carol’s service and dedication to NEF, the award recognizes an
outstanding construction educator or advocate for construction education, and
is awarded to a individual outside of the NAWIC membership. The guidelines and nomination forms were
mailed to chapter presidents on March 26.
Deadline for nominations is May 15, 2008.
MAGIC CAMP NEWS:
The following
email was received from Immediate Past President, Chris Wigginton:
I thought I would
share some exciting news from SAWIC (South African Women In Construction). I have just heard from Anna Marie, one of the
SAWIC members I met last year in South Africa.
She had just finished a meeting with the government and they have
approved a construction program for high school students. They remembered me speaking on MAGIC and
contacted me for more information. We
have sent them all they need to get started and will continue to assist them
with what they need.
Looks like MAGIC
is going global!!
…in closing,
Don’t forget to
utilize the NAWIC website for information, education, upcoming events, etc. at www.nawic.org .
As we go about
our day-to-day routines, let us not forget those who are less fortunate than
ourselves. If you have been too busy to
call an old friend lately, take a minute to do so – you may be surprised to
know your thoughtfulness just made their day a little brighter.
Best wishes and
safe travels,
Julia
