February/March  2006                                                                                    Essential Pieces of Success – a Region 7 Newsletter

From Director Judy

I hope you are seriously considering attending Region 7 Forum on April 28-29 in Houston.  I can guarantee that you will find it beneficial to your NAWIC career and to your professional career.  We are certainly planning an informative, educational, and fun weekend.  Registration forms are going out by email as I write this.

In addition to attending Forum, would you and/or your chapter consider buying an ad in the Forum Program Book?  It would be a way to reach women from all over the area and it would be a big help with the financial aspects of the conference.  We feel it’s important to keep registration at $150/ea., but hope to avoid any deficit by soliciting sponsorships.  You’ve had Forum in your city, too.  You understand all about food costs!

NAWIC Mid-Year Board Meeting is March 2 – 5.  It is the duty of your Director to attend and to represent you.  It’s also a privilege.  There is much to learn from the other Directors and Officers.  And they are so willing to share their expertise.  We will meet at the convention hotel in Kansas City, so I will be able to report to you on the convention facilities.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Reminders …

Your chapter nominating committee must be elected no later than the end of March.  It must consist of not less that 3 members – 2 shall be elected from the membership and 1 shall be elected from the Board of Directors.  You can have more members on the nominating committee.  I would suggest having a total of five – 3 from the membership and 2 from the Board.

The nominating committee must submit their slate of officers to the membership by the end of May.  Nominations also be taken from the floor before elections.

Your chapter officers for the 2006-2007 must be elected no later than the end of June.  They take office officially on October 1, but installation is normally held in September.

Refer to Article VI – Elections of the Chapter Bylaws for further information.

The Corpus Christi Chapter #4 will be celebrating Red for Women Month in February. At our meeting we all will be wearing red shirts and jeans. We will have a speaker from the American Heart Association tell us how to help prevent heart problems. Maybe we all can be a healthier group.

NAWIC Fort Worth

The Fort Worth Chapter is continuing to work on the projects started in January. We are looking forward to our WIC Week event on March 10, 2006. Reservations are being taken to attend the Taste of Texas Wine Tasting.  We had several guests that attended our meeting that are possible members in the near future. We are striving to introduce more women to NAWIC.                                                                                        The Bowl for Kids supporting Big Brother and Big Sister has changed to April 22, 2006.  Anna Hammond spoke to Chapter about how important our help was and we have a good time besides.  The Scholarship committee had a very successful silent auction with funds to help students attending CEF programs. Certainly help for the construction industry.

NAWIC Houston

Houston is looking forward to Block Kids on February 18th.  Gail Traylor  and her Block Kids committee are excited about returning to Nitsch Elementary. The school faculty is extremely cooperative and appreciative. Several new members and other industry professionals are coming to help judge the competition. I do think that we have as much fun as the children do!

Houston has launched our NAWIC Supporter ways and means project. Our Houston members have worked very hard to come up with a good program, and we are hoping for lots of NAWIC Supporters! If any other chapters are interested in seeing the information that we have distributed, we will be glad to share.

We had another excellent program this month. Larry Spasic, Interim President of the San Jacinto Museum of History discussed the construction of the San Jacinto Monument and the future plans for the museum and monument

Start looking for those flip-flops, sunscreen, birthday attire, and don’t forget to “Save that Date”, April 28th and 29th, for Houston’s Forum 2006.

Our February monthly meeting will be featuring guest speakers Margo Gary & Tom Gunning with Horizon Engineering the will be speaking on the construction of “The American” statue that is to be built in the Tulsa area.  This should be a very exciting and informative meeting and we look forward to having several guests attend.  Our March meeting guest speaker will be Scott Dawes with All Steel Buildings.  Mr. Dawes will be speaking on building Casinos.

For WIC Week Sherran Harris has received a Proclamation from Mayor LaFortune from the City of Tulsa.  She has also arranged for us to go see the APAC quarry on Wednesday March 8th at 12:00.  We will be taken on a tour of the facility and they will be providing our lunch.

NAWIC San Antonio

Our Chapter members are off and running.  Industry Appreciation Night was a huge success, 61 members and guest attending.  Marsha McCombs Shields, President of McCombs Foundation, spoke on her experiences of working in male dominated industries, including as the team owner, entering the Minnesota Vikings locker room after a game.  One experience she does not care to live again!  Kari Wirth along with her committee members are putting the final touches on the Block Kids event set for February 24th.     Sky Harbor Elementary is the site for this year’s building competition.  The "Friends of NAWIC" campaign has been very successful this year.  We would be glad to share our “method” for this sponsorship program.  Way to go Becky!! To celebrate WIC Week we are having a Wine & Cheese Mixer March 8th.  For each prospective member that a member brings, she gets a chance to win a wine basket, including two NAWIC 50th anniversary wine glasses.  Our chapter will represent NAWIC with our “Hard Hats and High Heels” booth and will attempt to place in the ABC Chili Cook-Off \Hunters Extravaganza on March 23rd…. Rumor has it we will be wearing pink hard hats (with the exception of Judy!!).  Our Chapter events are listed on the SA NAWIC Website calendar.

Do your part - share NAWIC!

NAWIC Professional Education Report

Kudos to Houston Chapter #3 for having their monthly meeting speakers booked for the entire year. Their topics include: “Ethics of Estimating,” “Construction in Iraq,” “New Wave of Safety” and “Re-construction at the San Jacinto Museum.”

[Houston #3 P.E. Chair is Denise Nestel with the assistance of Norma Lacey, both of Porter & Hedges, LLP]

Fort Worth Chapter #1’s P.E. Chairs have hosted regular committee meetings to work on upcoming speakers, Industry Appreciation and WIC Week. This month’s meeting will give the attendees an education on wine tasting and vineyard management which will tie into WIC Week—interesting!!!

[Fort Worth #1 P.E. Chairs are Lisa McDonald, Hohmann & Barnard, Inc. and Donna McGuire, McGraw-Hill Construction Dodge]

The last report I received came from Dallas Chapter #2. This month’s meeting will have guest speakers from CEF (Construction Education Foundation) who will talk about the new classes being offered and what they are doing to encourage enrollment.  [Dallas #2 P.E. Chair is Fran Pritt, Centex Construction. Credit also goes to Misty Taylor of McCullough & Associates]

Keep the reports coming. I look forward to sharing your Professional Education accomplishments as well as future plans at Forum. It would be great to hear from all of Region 7 by the end of February.

PR/Marketing Committee

Hello Ladies:  Here are a few new items from the Marketing Committee.  The national office has an online order form for marketing materials.  All of them are free to your chapter you just have to ask for them.  The link is attached here  Also, I am in the process of putting together an order form for some promotion items that we are going to try and order as a region.  Have your chapters look ahead and think about how much money you would like to budget for these items and if there are any specific items you would like to purchase.  I would like to get the flyers out to you in the next week or two and get everything ordered so that we can distribute at Forum.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

NEF Corner

Jan Sullivan, Region 4 NEF Liaison wrote the following letter to her Region and I would like to “copy with pride”  her words with each of you in Region 7:  LKC

There is no one person that knows all about construction.  There are some that know volumes and then there are some that are afraid to open their mouths in construction conversations.  Where do you fit?  Do you know your job very well but realize that it is only a small part of the construction process?  Are you new to your job and the construction industry?  Do you remember being a part of a conversation and finding yourself  lost when terms like footer, unforeseen conditions, fascia,  prestressed concrete,  field order, change order, waivers of lien, or certificate of insurance were used?  Do you feel like you have worked at your job forever and there is no end in site?  Do you want to advance but feel you are being ignored by your company?   Have you checked out the NEF certification exams?

Make some time for yourself!  Study and take the Certified Industry Technician (CIT) exam, or the Certified Document Specialist (CDS) exam, or one the six necessary exams to achieve your Certified Construction Associate (CCA) certification.

Start now!  Spread the word!  Not only does NAWIC strive to enhance the success of women in the construction industry, but the NAWIC Education Foundation strives to promote construction education.  Don’t wait; do it for yourself!

Register by March 15th to test on May 5th.
